Headaches are one of the most common of all ailments; they are a symptom of a disorder rather than a disorder in itself.
Most often the cause is due to muscle tension and/or the dilatation of blood vessels in surrounding tissues otherwise known as vasodilation. When vasodilation occurs, it allows blood to flow faster whilst restricting the pressure of the blood to the head thus causing headaches. There are various types of headaches, from the mild tension headaches to migraines to the excruciatingly painful cluster headaches and the hormonal imbalance headache.
Tension Headaches: Tension Headaches are the most common and relatively mild in severity. More often they are caused by muscle tension, dehydration, and stress or poor posture.
Migraine Headaches: There are varieties of migraines and some so severe it can prevent people from carrying out daily tasks. Often reported alongside migraines are sensitivities to light and sound, nausea and vomiting.
Cluster Headaches: The rarest type of headache, which appear without warning. Pain often described as burning, sharp and piercing around the temple and eye area, often linked to the hypothalamus gland in the brain.
Hormonal Headaches: A common occurrence in the 2/3 days leading up to the menstrual cycle, often associated with a drop in oestrogen at this time. Other causes maybe related to changes in hormones when taking the contraceptive pill or during the menopause or pregnancy when our endocrine system is working tirelessly to rebalance our system.
