The Benefits of Reflexology
There are many reported benefits of reflexology; It can help improve nerve function and the central nervous system, boost circulation, eliminate toxins. It may help improve your immune system to aid recover after injury or stress, induces a deep state of relaxation, or help reduce the effects of depression, it is also used in pain clinics to alleviate pain. Furthermore, it has been used all over the UK to help ease the treatment side effects of cancer. The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton have their very own reflexologists who help those in need before, during or after treatment.
More and more maternity wards and clinics all over the UK are slowly seeing the benefits Reflexology, which may help reduce labour intensity and duration. It has also been used to aid healing and to reduce post natal depression following birth.

Relieves StressStress is a normal physical response to events when a person feels threatened. It can be a chemical reaction, which is governed by our autonomic nervous system (ANS). Reflexology is a therapeutic method of relaxing the body and balancing the biological systems and in doing so helps the nervous system to function normally by introducing a relaxed state, allowing the body to find its Homeostasis.

Improves CirculationThe circulatory system is responsible for the flow of blood, nutrients, oxygen and hormones to and from cells. Without the circulatory system, the body would not be able to fight disease or maintain a stable internal environment. Poor circulation of blood and fluid can be very unpleasant and painful and can occur in men, woman and children. Long periods of inactivity, poor diet and disease all contribute to the many types of circulatory disturbances.
Reflexology uses certain hand and finger techniques which has been shown to improve blood flow throughout the body in order to reach those vital organs |
Promotes RelaxationRelaxation is perhaps the single most important key to health and well-being. It is the antidote to stress which is known to contribute to the development of disease. When we relax, our body has an opportunity to unwind and repair itself; it regulates our mood and is linked to learning and memory function. If we don’t get enough rest we put ourselves at risk from illness, and overloading can cause an impact to our immune system, memory function and stress levels.

Reduces Pain Intensity
Reflexology is an effective pain management therapy and is used in pain clinics, maternity wards and cancer centres throughout the world. Its effectiveness owes itself to the sedating benefits of specific application techniques and upon this state allows the endorphins, which is several times stronger than morphine to push through and block those pain signals to the brain. People experiencing pain may often get significant relief from Reflexology.
Removes Toxic Waste
Toxins are everywhere; in the food we eat, water we drink and the air we breathe. A build-up of toxins in the body can compromise our physical and mental health. If you don’t detoxify your body from time to time to get rid of the toxins your system will eventually become overloaded and cause many health problems.
Following a Reflexology treatment, it is often noted that a person may have what is called a ‘healing crisis’, in other words side effects. Although very minimal and short lived the side effects are evidence that toxins are leaving the body, noted effects are improved urination or unusual smelling urine, headaches, excessive gas, (burping or flatulence), feeling cold or perspiring, these are all symptoms indicative of detoxing.

Encourages Healthy Sleep Patterns
There is no doubt that Reflexology can help improve your sleep. One of the most common feedback comments following a reflexology session is that they’ve slept much better and for far longer or deeper than before. Insomniacs often benefit from reflexology, and more often than not there are other findings throughout the session that, although does not hinder the person today, may contribute to the reason for their poor sleeping behaviour.
Reflexology induces a deep state of relaxation, which assists the body to relax and in turn encourages better sleep, additional sleep gives your systems that much needed rest to fire up that boost of energy, which allows you to focus and give you the strength to see you through the day ahead.

Used as Preventative Measure
Reflexology is known as both complementary and preventative medicine: complementary as it works extremely well alongside many other therapies and preventative as often the reflexologist can detect an area of imbalance via the reflex points and will work these areas – helping to prevent the development of some form of dis-ease.
It's Perfect for Everyone!
It is a myth that Reflexology has its restrictions or as the say in the industry ‘contraindications’. It is simply not true. Reflexology is perfect for anyone, young or old, sick or healthy, pregnant or disabled; mentally or physically. You need to choose a qualified Reflexologist who has been trained to provide care in any event and not shy away. It is hugely beneficial in the most sensitive of areas, such as Palliative Care, Children and those following major operations, it helps them heal be comfortable and have company when they need it most. There are only a few exceptions to this rule and that is those suffering from undiagnosed DVT or Embolisms.
Self Help is Easily Applied.
It’s safe to say we cannot apply the same rules to other therapies as we can to reflexology. I certainly wouldn’t like try and poke pins in my limbs and face to alleviate pain, no more than performing acrobatics to remove those knots and tension in the back, which looks so easy from a Chiropractors perspective. However, Reflexology is unique and easily applied, with a little Self-Help guidance from a professional you can complement their sessions with a little booster from your own fingers and thumbs, it really is that easy, if you don’t find it comfortable then use the pressure points on your hands; it all works with the same concept.
