There are many reasons for back pain; some have nothing to do with the back at all! The back is the most important structure of the body. The intricate anatomy provides a great deal of strength for the trunk of the body, it provides support for the head and with the never ending intertwining of the muscles, nerves, tendons and ligaments provides the flexibility for movement.
The spinal cord starts at the brain stem and finishes at L1, the 1st lumbar vertebra. It’s approx. 18 inches long and as wide as your thumb, it has thirty one pairs of nerves responsible for picking up messages and relaying them to back and forth from the brain to the spinal cord. Nerve innervation or the assessment of is used often in Reflexology to determine the origination of the pain, for example lower back pain could be related to digestive issues or kidneys.
